Community Shred-a-Thon Set to Recycle More Personal Documents this Saturday

CHILLIWACK (December 5, 2014) This holiday season Chilliwack residents will once again be able to recycle personal documents and mounds of paperwork but, as usual, they’ll also be able to help individuals and families in need. On December 6^th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Emterra Environmental and co-sponsors; the City of Chilliwack, Cottonwood Mall and Shred-It will host this year’s final Shred-A-Thon.

The Shred-a-Thon will be held at the Cottonwood Mall and will give residents the chance to have their documents securely shredded and recycled at no charge. As part of the event participants are encouraged to bring in food and cash donations which will help the Salvation Army prepare food baskets for families in need this Christmas.

“With the holidays around the corner, some local residents and families need the support of their community so that they can enjoy a festive meal with loved ones,” said Terry Dawson, Operations Manager, Chilliwack Division. “Emterra is proud to be part of an event that not only helps to recycle more paper but will also make a positive difference in the lives of local residents and families.”

During the last Shred-a-Thon, which was held this past June, over 1,200 pounds of non-perishable food items and $1000 in cash were collected as donations. In the spirit of the holidays, Emterra is hoping to collect even more for local families and residents during December’s event.  Emterra provides matching funds up to a total of $1,000 to help boost the Salvation Army’s Christmas fundraising efforts.

Shred-a-Thons are part of Emterra’s Community Care™ Program which seeks to improve the health and well being of the environment and communities across Canada. Since 2009 Emterra has raised over $10,000 in cash donations and has collected approximately 12,000 pounds in food donations through bi-annual Shred-a-Thons. These special events have also helped to divert 20 tonnes of paper away from the landfill so that it could be recycled and reused.
